The third working period of the NARVAWATMAN project has come to its end. Various project activities were performed from March to August 2020, including field measurements of the Narva river discharges. As planned before, the measurements were done simultaneously from both sides of the river by Estonian and Russian specialists. Unfortunately, as everywhere in the world, our project was also affected by COVID-19 outbreak. We could not take some planned water samples as the border between Estonia and Russia was closed, also some contact meetings and planned workshops were rescheduled.
However, the data we’ve already gathered help us to a great extent towards achieving the project goals, i.e. developing a harmonised solution for the Narva river pollution load estimation and saving its ecological state and the state of the Baltic Sea we altogether share. We completed Winter Eco-Marathon in time and conducted in summer 2020 Duathlon (rowing and cycling) on the Russian side of the Narva river with a support from Estonian bank.
Even though we couldn’t conduct all the planned discharge measurements and water samples this period, we decided to postpone what’s left and perform discharge measurements in September – October 2020 and water sampling in spring - summer 2021, getting closer to our goal.
